Pet Urn Size Calculator: Convert Volume and Compare Capacity

by PetMoy Editorial Team on Sep 03, 2026
Beach-style ceramic photo pet urn with a fitted lid and painted pet portrait

Use a pet urn size calculator to put the cremation provider's returned volume and the product listing in the same unit. It cannot determine capacity from a pet's breed or body weight with certainty. Ask the provider how much material and what packaging you will receive, then compare that information with the urn's listed internal capacity, opening, and closure.

Quick conversion calculator

Use the measurement supplied by the provider:

  • Cubic inches to milliliters: cubic inches x 16.387
  • Milliliters to cubic inches: milliliters / 16.387
  • US fluid ounces to milliliters: fluid ounces x 29.574
  • Milliliters to US fluid ounces: milliliters / 29.574

These are standard unit conversions, not a prediction of ash volume. Round upward for comparison rather than treating the last decimal as meaningful.

Provider's stated volume Approx. milliliters Approx. US fluid ounces
10 cubic inches 164 ml 5.5 fl oz
20 cubic inches 328 ml 11.1 fl oz
30 cubic inches 492 ml 16.6 fl oz
40 cubic inches 655 ml 22.2 fl oz
60 cubic inches 983 ml 33.2 fl oz

If the provider gives only the size of its temporary container, ask whether that measurement describes usable internal volume or only exterior dimensions.

Why body weight alone is not enough

Pre-cremation weight is not the same as returned volume. The cremation procedure, processing, packaging, and whether the family keeps full or partial ashes all affect the practical container choice. A calculator based only on weight also cannot tell you whether a sealed bag will pass through an urn's opening.

Ask the provider:

  • What amount or container size will be returned?
  • Are the remains sealed in a bag or another package?
  • Can the bag be placed inside a display urn without opening it?
  • Is there a recommended transfer method?

Measure the right thing

When a provider gives you a container, measure or record its internal volume if that information is available. Exterior height and width do not reveal usable capacity because walls, lids, bases, and decorative shapes take up space. A narrow opening can also make a large-volume container impractical for a sealed bag.

Check current PetMoy urn listings

Ceramic landscape pet urn with sculpted pet figures on a fitted lid
The current figurine-lid urn lists 350, 550, 750, and 1,000 ml options.

PetMoy's pet urn collection includes several ceramic formats. The 12 oz custom pet photo urn lists approximately 12 oz (about 355 ml), while the ceramic figurine-lid urn offers 350 ml, 550 ml, 750 ml, and 1,000 ml options on its current product page. These product figures are examples of listed capacities, not a recommendation for a particular pet.

The handmade ceramic cat urn lists small and medium dimensions rather than a single universal ash volume. Confirm the amount you need and the current option details before ordering.

The listed dimensions are different from capacity. The cat urn lists S at 8 x 17 cm (3.1 x 6.7 in) and M at 9 x 19 cm (3.5 x 7.5 in), but the PDP does not state a universal milliliter capacity. The photo urn lists 12 x 10 cm and approximately 355 ml. Use the provider's returned amount and the product's listed capacity or dimensions together; do not infer a fit from a product name alone.

Compare three separate measurements

Glossy ceramic sitting-cat urns shown in small and medium sizes
The cat urn listing gives exterior S and M dimensions, not a universal internal volume.
  1. Returned volume: the amount the provider says it will return.
  2. Usable internal capacity: the product's stated volume, when available.
  3. Exterior dimensions and opening: the physical measurements that determine display space and whether the provider's sealed package can be inserted.

Do not substitute exterior height and width for internal capacity. If you want to keep only a portion, decide that with the household and provider before transferring the remains.

A simple decision flow

  1. Ask the provider what volume and packaging you will receive.
  2. Convert that volume into the same unit used on the product page.
  3. Compare usable internal capacity, opening, and closure.
  4. Confirm whether a sealed bag can be placed inside without transfer.
  5. Avoid selecting a container at the exact edge of the stated amount.
  6. Recheck the current product dimensions and options before purchase.

Before ordering a personalized urn, compare the style, capacity, photo angle, and pet count with the memorial details you have prepared. The product page lists the available combinations so you can choose the format that fits your plan.

FAQ

How much capacity do I need for a 20 lb dog?

Body weight alone does not give a reliable final capacity. Ask the provider for its expected returned volume and packaging, then use the conversions above to compare products.

Is a 12 oz urn enough for every small dog?

No. A 12 oz capacity is a product specification, not a guarantee based on the label “small dog.” Compare it with the amount and packaging supplied by the provider.

Do I need extra room?

Practical room may be helpful for a sealed bag or transfer, but the right margin depends on the packaging and container opening. Ask the provider rather than relying on a universal percentage.

Can I use an urn for partial ashes?

Some products can hold partial ashes, but confirm the intended use and opening on the specific product page. Decide how the family wants to divide the remains before transferring them.

Sources and product fact-check

The unit formulas use the conversion relationships summarized in NIST Special Publication 811. Product capacities and dimensions were checked against the linked PetMoy listings on August 27, 2026. The calculator does not estimate ash volume from body weight.

Editorial note: This calculator performs unit conversions and product comparisons. It does not predict ash volume, guarantee fit, or replace instructions from the cremation provider.
